Back-illuminated CMOS

Back-illuminated sensors have always been synonymous with high sensitivity and high quantum efficiency. Back-illuminated imaging technique orients the metal wiring behind the photocathode layer, reducing the light reflection caused by passing through the wiring layer. Back-illuminated CCDs have been widely used in professional astronomical research, but the substantially high costs have kept them away from amateur astronomy. The new QHY183C back-illuminated CMOS camera not only gives the same high sensitivity as a back-illuminated CCD, but also has readout noise as low as 1 electron. It is an outstandingly good value for the money with dream performance.

Sony's Image Sensor Exmor R is the back-illuminated CMOS image sensor with improved sensitivity and noise reduction - the key factors to enhancing image quality, while radically realigning their fundamental pixel structure from front-illumination to back-illumination. It has retained the advantages of CMOS image sensors such as low power consumption and high-speed operation
With a conventional front-illumination structure, the metal wiring and transistors on the surface of the silicon substrate that form the sensor's light-sensitive area (photo-diode) impede photon gathering carried out by the on-chip lens, and this has also been an important issue in the miniaturization of pixels and widening optical angle response. 
A back-illuminated structure minimizes the degradation of sensitivity to optical angle response, while also increasing the amount of light that enters each pixel due to the lack of obstacles such as metal wiring and transistors that have been moved to the reverse of the silicon substrate. 
However, compared to conventional front-illuminated structures, back-illuminated structures commonly causes problems such as noise, dark current, defective pixels and color mixture that lead to image degradation and also cause a decrease in the signal-to-noise ratio. 
To overcome this Sony has newly developed a unique photo-diode structure and on-chip lens optimized for back-illuminated structures, that achieves a higher sensitivity and a lower random noise without light by reducing noise, dark current and defect pixels compared to the conventional front-illuminated structure. Additionally, Sony's advanced technologies such as high-precision alignment have addressed any color mixture problems.

20 Mega Pixels

Twenty mega pixels, 2.4 micrometers high resolution, making the most out of the fine detail available to your telescope. Full resolution real-time output at 15 frames per second, highly suitable for EAA (Electronically Assisted Astronomy) real-time deep space observation and lucky imaging photography. By short-time exposure and massive superpositioning (stacking), you can make use of the large telescopes' advantage of high resolution, reducing the influence of atmospheric agitation, to capture a great amount of detail. Short-time exposures can also lower the requirement for tracking accuracy, giving a higher probability of capturing a good image without fancy guiding equipment.

New ultra-thin stepper motor drive and fully automatic filter switching revolutionizes overall performance!

New ultra-thin hybrid stepper motor drive.

QHYCCD selected a high quality ultra-thin hybrid stepper motor for the 3rd generation filter wheel design. Compared to the PM stepper motor used in many filter wheels, the hybrid stepper motor has higher precision, smaller step angle, and is more expensive. The motor is enclosed to prevent dust from entering the motor, thus improving reliability and motor life. The direction of filter rotation can be reversed: The filter carousel can be rotated clockwise or counterclockwise to complete the rotation quickly which is very convenient. The overall design is thinner.

Friction drive with zero backlash

Regarding the evolution of the motor drive, our 2nd generation filter wheels used a gear drive while this 3rd generation filter wheel uses a friction drive that results in zero backlash during operation.

USB serial port switch.

The serial port switch can accommodate fast switching between serial communication mode and USB communication mode.

Use the USB port to power the filter wheel.

The filter wheel supports the QHY 4-pin connection control mode. The firmware is open source and compatible with Arduino. The design is compatible with the QHY-OAG (off-axis guide) for the corresponding size

The QHYCFW3 main body is cut from a single piece of aluminum by a precision CNC machine. The craftsmanship and finish are exquisite. When you hold the small design, you do not want to put it down!
A specially designed filter carousel allows the installation of unmounted filters of different thicknesses. Mounted Filters below 10 mm thick can be installed and unmounted filters of different thicknesses can also be mounted on the same filter disc. Filter positioning is more precise and faster.
